Firesomething
This is a great humourous Firefox Extension which gives different titles to your browser window, such as Powerjackel or Lightingporpoise. The plugin was created by Cosmic Cat Creations, not me. The main page for this extension can be found on Cosmic Cat’s site. However, it does not install properly on the latest versions of Firefox. I have modified the plugin simply by changing the compatability checking, since the actual code seems to work fine up to Firefox 1.5.0.2. I have had no problems running it, but of course cannot garuntee the same for you.
To install: Download the file, then open Firefox and click File -> Open File. Find the firesomething.xpi file you just downloaded, and then click install. Comment here if you have any problems.
Edit: This extension now works with Firefox 2.0.
Back to "Firefox"
Any plans to expand FireSomething, to change all instances of “Mozilla” and “Firefox” on any given page, to the randomized versions? Love the extension, btw.
My roommates say “Thunder-hound? Water-badger? Where can I get that browser?!”
I downloaded it but cannot open it. Help! I miss my FireSomething since I’ve upgraded Firefox
Wonderful! This was, absolutely, my favorite Firefox extension and have desperately missed it since (it appears) cosmic cat abandoned it.
Unfortunately, I’ve noticed a bit of a bug, and am curious if you might have some insight. When using your version of the extension on (self compiled) Firefox 1.5.0.4 on a linux box, as well as the same version (prebuilt and downloaded from mozilla.org) on a Windows XP SP2 box, the shortcuts for switching between tabs doesn’t work. Control-PgUp/PgDown seems to jump between random tabs - oftentimes, it appears to jump tabs… if I’m on the third tab, it’ll jump between the first and third; if I’m on the second tab, it’ll jump between the second and fourth (and sixth, eighth, etc.).
Any thoughts?
Bill,
That’s very strange, I’ve never observed anything like that.
I always use Control-Tab, Control-Shift-Tab to cycle through tabs. Does the problem persist when you use those instead of Control-PgUp/PgDown? Also, are you sure it’s another extension causing the problem? Tab Mix Plus by default sets the tab switching to the order you last viewed them, which threw me off for a while. There’s not really anything else I can do, since I’m not familiar with the code…
Hope you can get it working!
Thanks for getting back (and giving me a much needed clue). I assumed it might be something with the “old” firesomething code. And, digging around, I couldn’t figure out a darn thing (commenting out sections of the xul, repackaging, reload, same problems).
I’d heard of many issues with Tab Mix Plus - so I never installed it. That couldn’t be it. But that gave me a clue….
So, through process of elimination, narrowed it down to an issue with All-In-One Sidebar. Version 0.6.4 (their last official release, Jan 2006) has issues with this version of Firesomething. Rather than live without either, I installed their version 0.7 beta 3 (June 2006)… and both play happily with each other. Sorry for the mix up!
(ps - I did start reading through your blog… didn’t realize you were on a break! Thanks for responding!)
Excellent, glad you got it working!
Hey, would it be possible if you could configure firesomething to work with firefox 2.0 and higher? Thanks.
Done!
The extension will now work with Firefox 2.0 and up.
