Wordpress Plugin Template

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

Fellow Wordpress enthusiasts,
I have written several Wordpress plugins for a client over the last few weeks. Through these, I have gained some techniques for creating widgets which work as non-widgets, and also have their own options pages. With this newfound knowledge, I have created a generic plugin template. It includes all the framework necessary for a displayable plugin (Something which will show up in a sidebar, template, or anywhere in a post using a token such as <!-- someplugin -->). The template is full of comments, so you shouldn’t have trouble figuring it out. You can download it here: Wordpress Plugin Template

Slight Redesign

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

In culmination of several days’ work, I have completed a new header for Trev’s Travels. I’m very happy with it’s look, which I feel is much classier than the old blocky style The images which appear when you hover over the text are from the Tango Project. Also, many thanks to Stu Nicholls from CSSplay.co.uk. I made extensive use of his articles in figuring out how to do the rollovers and image replacements in this new header. I’ve also updated the About Me page, so that it now contains my current weather, Folding@Home stats, and most recent bookmarks. The final addition is an About this Site page, which will contain information about the technologies powering Trev’s Travels, and give credit to the free software I use.

Making OpenOffice Look Handsome

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

For those of you who don’t know, OpenOffice is a free replacement for Microsoft Office. That’s a big deal when you consider that a copy of MS Office can set you back 400 bucks. The one problem I’ve had with OpenOffice, especially running under Ubuntu Linux, was that it was downright ugly! The icons were outdated, and didn’t fit with the unified look of my interface. Just the other day, I discovered how to change the icons to the beautiful Tango set. Finally I can stand looking at my word processor while I type in it! I mean, just look at the way cuter version of “Clippy”, and the nice toolbar buttons:
