(written from yesterday’s perspective)
Last night…
A bit of background: It’s very hot here. There’s a balcony over our courtyard. It has a beatiful breeze.
Logical conclusion: On hotter nights we take our foam mattresses out there and I get a night of sleep without having my eyeballs blasted dry by a fan
The rainy season started about a week ago, and it’s been raining just about every night, which has led to several frantic “Ah, it’s raining! Grab your beds and run!!”’s. Finally Darren and I decided that we were going to stick it out stay out there, since the other nights the rain had only lasted about half an hour. So, we take our stuff out, and it’s already lightly sprinkling. At first I hardly get wet since my blanket sheds most of the water. However, after about an hour, the rain still hasn’t stopped, and we are both thoroughly soaked. So… we do the only thing we could, we got up and danced around in the rain! I invented my own dance…it was very cool
When we finally decided to try and sleep, we found it didn’t work, and we lasted until about 3:30, when we both went inside. But Darren went in first, so I won!! It ended up raining all night, and into the morning!
That afternoon we went downtown to try and find jeans, but most of the ones we found were waist size 58!
Might have to put a few pounds on first
Then I heard one of the funniest quotes from a Senegalese guy. My brother, sister and I were waiting around, talking to each other, when he walks up and starts talking to us. The dialog went something like this:
Him: “So what language do you guys speak? German?”
Me: “No, we speak English and French.”
Him: “Oh, you must be Italian!”
so funny!
Then when he found out we were Canadian he said he wanted us to get him a job in Canada. I told him it was really cold, and he thought he would manage, but I was thinking “With those clothes, out on the street, you would freeze to death”
These people have no idea what cold is! A few years ago, there was a “cold spell” when it went down to 10 degrees Celcius, and people died in the villages!
I went on another adventure down to the market, looking for a tray for our attaya set, and it was actually pretty fun! I went to see the guy who had sold us the fourno, and he was glad to see me. Maybe I’ll go down and make attaya with him sometime. I just enjoyed walking around Senegalese people in the market, by myself… I didn’t even find what I was looking for
Then in the evening, I played guitar with my dad and brother to get ready for Sunday morning worship for our family. How cool is it to have a family you can jam with?
I still prefer playing alone though
We’re buying some new clothes from www.oldnavy.com, here’s what I’m getting:
